WE RECOMMEND only those organisations with whom we are in regular contact.
In the Peloponnese these include:
The HOTEL MINOA in Tolo, a family run hotel, literally on the beach about 10 metres from the sea - the occupants of sea facing rooms hear the lapping of the waves and wake up to the sun rising over Romvi Island opposite. The food is good, the hotel clean and very comfortable, but what is exemplary is the fact that loyal staff members have been there years, the family mans the reception and - it has to be said - many of their clientele have been visiting year after year, after year - just as we have.
THE HOTEL ITLIO Itilo, near Areopolis in the Mani. A luxurious, beautifully designed and furnished hotel but quirky with it. Theodore and his young family, the son of the original owners of the previous hotel on this magnificent seashore site, run the hotel as a welcome refuge from the dramatic scenery and crashing waves that so often thunder into the Bay of Itilo, where it is said Napoleon landed but the old hill village Oitilo surviving in the original name since Homer. If Panayiota is cooking individually for guests you can be in for a fantastic meal, try goat cooked slowly in the oven or fish soup.
The HOTEL CHRYSSI AKTI, (GOLDEN BEACH) at Tigani beach near Paralia Tirou. A small hotel of about 20 rooms, again family run, modest but also modern, with air-conditioning, TV, clean and comfortable en-suite rooms with balconies facing the sea and views over the southern Argolic Gulf towards Speses. 25 mins drive from historic Leonidio and 1 hour from the old Greek captial of Nafplio, with many important historic sites within a day tour, the beautiful garden and orchard surrounding the paved breakfast patio, and the walk down through the garden on wooded path leading to a beautiful beach with sunbeds and pedalos and snack bar, make this hotel a hidden paradise.
The ELEONAS apartments and villas in Gialova near Pylos are exceptionally well run with the Karalis family on site to handle all your queries. Very comfortable villas some with their own pools and all accommodation with access to a shared pool is an excellent base for access to sandy beaches and the wonderfull history of the Western Peloponnese.
In Northern Greece: Macedonia:
The boutique HOTEL LIOTOPI in Olymbiada is gathering more and more good reviews. Lulu's attention to detail is unmatched. Her brother's HOTEL AKROYALI (Formally Hotel GERMANY) close by (which is open all year) offers taverna-style dinner with tables almost on the beach and shallow waters of this delightful Greek quiet seaside village. The ancient site of Stageira the homeland of Aristotle has only recently been excavated with outstanding results and is within walking distance. The area of Halkidiki is great for historical sightseeing and its magical sandy beaches are within driving distance.
Explore Thessaly: A base for the massive untamed mountains of the Pindus, the plains of Thessaly or even the Meteora, is the beautifully run HOTEL GIAMANDES in Elati Trikalon. Its many facilities, its lovely family atmosphere and its position in the fir trees just outside the village make it a beautiful place to stay.
An island surprise! THE HOTEL VOTSALA at Thermi on Lesvos is a beautifully run simple hotel right on the sea on the East Coast. It hasn't altered its ethos in years and it is the ambiiance and atmosphere created by Iannis and Daphne, whether it is the once a week dinner served at the Hotel (there are tavernas in historic Thermi) or the music played at breakfast (classical) or rock/blues in the evening making a lasting impression of peace and relaxation. We were not surprised to learn that Daphne has been awarded a particularly prestigious award for her help on the island during the refugee crisis of 2015.
TOUR OPERATORS we recommend when considering GREECE include:
SUNVIL HOLIDAYS & THE VILLA COLLECTION (GIC) who are able to offer luxury villas, fly-drives and value for money self-catering holidays. Again the emphasis is on a firm built up by two families who since the early 1970s have made it their life's work to build up a strong brand expertly run by professional staff who have worked their way up through the company. A firm highly thought of in the travel industry with their chairman Noel Josephides also currently in the chair of ABTA.
